Credit Card Reward Programs - Making Them Work for You

By Kerry Hedden

There are many ways that credit card companies go about enticing applicants to fill out applications for credit with them. Depending on the type of company it is, most credit card companies offer credit card reward programs as incentives for those looking to get a line of credit, and a way of keeping their customers happy and spending money. Most of the big credit card names have at least one card on their docket that has some type of rewards program set in place, such as a cash back rewards type of program or something of that nature.

If you are in the market for a credit card, try to choose one with a credit card rewards program that you can live with. If you like gift cards, chances are that the company has a program for that and for those who have cash back rewards programs, which is a great way of making back some of the money that you have spent on your card. Frequent flyer miles type programs are also popular and useful. The type of credit card rewards program that you decide to use should be something you can use, or it is nothing more than a waste of money and time.

  • If you are going to apply for a credit card, choose one that has the type of rewards program that you can most benefit from. Here are a few ways that you can benefit from using your credit cards reward program, and pricing the right one for you.
  • If you like to travel a great deal, check out some of the airline credit card rewards programs that some companies offer. The more money you spend, the more flyer miles you qualify for. This is a great way to get some use out of your card and cut some costs out of your vacation.
  • Use your credit card to pay for things you would normally use real money for. Then, take the money you would use and send it right into the credit card company. Most credit card companies have a grace period so you can avoid finance charges this way and this is a great way to stack some extra credit card rewards program points for yourself.
  • Pay your monthly bills using your credit card. Think of the things you normally pay for, like your car insurance and light bill, your cable bill and your gas bill. Use your cash to pay your credit card bill, and you can earn some extra rewards points that way as well.

There are many ways you can go about getting the most out of your credit card rewards program, but the main idea is to use it like you would your debit card or check book, and stack as many points as you can. Eventually, you might be able to use your points to get your birthday gifts or take that vacation you have always wanted.
